Mearl James Reed , 64 , formerly of Rhea County , died Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at his home in Norfolk, Virginia .

Born in Rhea County , Mearl was the son of the late Frank and Eva Hawkins Reed. He was a graduate of Spring City High School, Class of 1971.  Mearl worked as a carpenter during his working career.  He enjoyed music and played in several bands through the years. Mearl liked history, collected Indian art ifacts and loved local folklore . He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his longtime companion Nilla Jean Mahaffey of Norfolk, son Jeremy (Wendy) Reed of Castle Rock, Colorado, special friend Chris Leete of Norfolk, brothers Carl (Karen) Reed of Pikeville and Earl Reed of Spring City, sisters Talma (Lamar) Mincy and Tina (Keith) Palmer both of Spring City and grandchild Logan Reed of Castle Rock.

There will be no services.  The family will receive friends Saturday, April 21, 2018 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at Vaughn Funeral Home.  Interment will be in the Spring City Cemetery.
