Maxine Stone Sherrill, age 87, of Hixson, Tennessee, passed away on December 9, 2020 .
Maxine was born July 23, 1933 in Celina , Tennessee. She was the daughter of Jacob Wilson and Docia Davis Stone.
Maxine was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a graduate of Mt. Juliet High School, class of 1951, where she was an All-State basketball player. She graduate d from Tennessee Polytechnic Institute in 1954. As a teacher in the Rhea County School System for 45 years, she taught Physical Education, Advanced Biology, Health, and General Business. She was recognized professionally being inducted into the Delta Kappa Society. She was an active member of the YMCA in both Dayton and Hixson. When her children were young, she served in many church activities at Central Baptist Church in Spring City. She was a member of New Union Baptist Church .
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jacob and Docia Stone ; four brothers, Waymon Stone . Frank Stone, J.D. Stone and Clyde Stone ; two sisters, Maurine Weeks and Melford Smith ; and h er mother-in-law , Amy Irene Sherrill.
Maxine is survived by her husband of 65 years, Mitchel Sherrill of Hixson, Tennessee ; daughter , Deborah (Scott) Hilleary of Spring City, Tennessee ; son, Rick Sherrill of Ocean Springs, Mississippi ; her granddaughters Mill ie ( Brian) Williams and Rebecca (Brandon ) Heath ; grandsons Parker Hilleary and Andrew Hilleary. Also, she is survived by her beloved nephew, Gordon (Sally) Reed of Spring City, Tennessee, along with many other loved nieces and nephew s.
A graveside s ervice will be held on Sunday, December 13, 2020 at 3:00 pm in the Spring City Cemetery , in Spring City , Tennessee with Rev. Danny Ruehling officiating . If you plan on attending the service, the family request you wear a mask and adhere to social distancing policies. There will be no gathering following the service due to Covid concerns .
The f amily would like to especially thank those at Manor House Assisted Living in Red B ank , TN and Hospice of Chattanooga. Lisa, Debbie, Linds a y, Carolyn, Leand, Fadra, Jesse, Cindi, Matt and many others cared for Maxine with much love and compassion.
