Obituary

Mary Galbraith Galloway, age 92 of Spring City, TN, passed away on January 6, 2020, at Dominion Senior Living in Hixson, TN.  Born on her family's farm on Rhea Springs Road outside Spring City, TN, Mary lived in the area her entire life.  She proudly traced her ancestry to the First Families of Tennessee.  She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Spring City and attended the United Methodist Church of Spring City following her marriage to Homer Boyd Galloway, Jr. (H. B.) in 1948.

She was preceded in death by H. B. and by her parents, Charles Chapman Galbraith and Stella Coulter Galbraith along with siblings and their spouses, Georgia Galbraith Hicks (Howard), Lee Galbraith, Lucille Galbraith, and Kathryn Galbraith Cowan (Don).

She was valedictorian of the Spring City High School Class of 1945, and immediately upon graduation was employed in the accounting department of Southern Silk Mills, where both she and   H. B. continued to work after their marriage in 1948 until they built the Double Q Drive-In in 1955, which they owned and operated from then until 1974.  After selling the business, Mary worked for a time with Bill Hilleary at SSM Industries, but she primarily concentrated her efforts in her roles as a banker's wife, homemaker, farmer and community volunteer.  She was a member of the United Methodist Women and the Spring City Women's Club.  She served on the Spring City and Regional Library Boards and was instrumental in the Spring City Library's renovation.  She worked tirelessly on behalf of the Rhea County Farm Service Agency and the Spring City Cemetery Association.

The mother of four, the grandmother of nine, and the great-grandmother of eleven, Mary was our teacher and counselor every step of the way.  She is survived by daughters Myra Tatum, Chattanooga, TN; Carolyn White (Lonnie), Midlothian, VA; Mary Ellen Sherry, Knoxville, TN; and son Boyd Galloway, Anderson, SC.  Her grandchildren include Lauren Sherry Reed, Luray, VA; Scott Sherry, West Palm Beach, FL; Meg Sherry, Seattle, WA; Nathan White, Sterling, VA; Kathryn White Lienard, Midlothian, VA; Michael White, N. Chesterfield, VA; Andy White, Ashburn, VA; Will White, Richmond, VA; and Erin Tatum Engle, Brentwood, TN.  Mary is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 3:00 pm EST, Friday, January 10, at the Spring City United Methodist Church with Rev. Dale S. Wyrick officiating.  Grandchildren will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends Friday at the church from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.   Burial will be at the Spring City Cemetery following the service.
