Obituary

Martha L. Jones Hood, 80, passed away Sunday, December 3, 2017 at Erlanger Medical Center.


Born in the Peninne Community of Spring City, she was a lifelong resident of Rhea County. Martha was the daughter of the late C. K. and Velma Moyers Jones.  She was a graduate of Spring City High School and an active member of New Union Baptist Church. An accomplished seamstress, Martha worked at the Kayser Roth Corp for over twenty years. She retired from Gerber Manufacturing in Lumberton, North Carolina; where she was a quality control manager and also from the La-Z-Boy Corp. in Dayton. She was a member of the Rhea County Historical Society and a former member of the Rhea County Crewettes.  Martha was also a volunteer with Hospice Association of Lumberton, North Carolina. Martha was very involved with New Union Church and never met a stranger, she made friends with everyone. She was loved by many and left a huge impact on everyone she met. She was also very active in several local tractor clubs and loved to raise roses.

She was preceded in death by her brothers Elmer, Henry, Howard, Eddie and Danny Jones and her sister Faye Alley and by her beloved great granddaughter Gracie.


Survivors include her beloved husband of 60 years Morgan Hood of Dayton, son Andy (Marsha) Hood of Dayton, sisters Mary (Kinnard) Hill of Spring City, grandchildren Brooke Hood, Carrie (Joey) Howell, Kevin Hood and Hunter Crook, Dusty (Paulena) Swafford and Lauren Swafford, and great grandchildren Kylie Howell, Kamyrn and Everly Swafford and several nieces and nephews.


Funeral services will be Thursday, December 7, 2017 at 1:00 PM at the New Union Baptist Church in Dayton with Dr. Danny Ruehling and Rev. Darwin Caldwell officiating.  Interment will follow in the Spence Cemetery. The body will lie in state at the church two hours prior to the services on Thursday. The family will receive friends Wednesday, December 6, 2017 from 5 to 8 pm at Vaughn Funeral Home.
