Obituary

John Powell, 86 of Dayton, formerly of Spring City, Tennessee passed away Tuesday June 23, 2026, at the Lifecare Center of Rhea Co., where he had made his home the last several years. He was born on November 8, 1939, in Hubbard, Nebraska to the late Leonard and Nellie Elizabeth Adams Powell Sr. He grew up in San Diego, California. After high school, John joined the U.S. Air Force to serve his country. He retired from the Air Force after 20 years; where he achieved the rank of Chief Master Sargeant. John worked as a public safety officer at TVA-Watts Bar for 17 years, retiring in 1994. He was a member of the Central Baptist Church in Spring City; where he was a member of the Adult Men's Sunday School Class. John was also a member of Rhea Springs Lodge #310 F&AM and a lifetime member of the V.F.W. He served in his community by being a member of the Rhea County Sheriff's Dept. S.C. A. N. program and helped with Meals on Wheels.

John was also preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years Jo Ann Standifer Powell.

Survivors include his children; Ann Scoggins of Spring City,Estel Powell of Garland, Texas and Carol (David) Hatela of Blue Springs, MO, his sister; Darian Powell of England, his brother; Leonard Powell Jr of Hemet, CA , four grandchildren, six great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

Graveside services with military honors will be Saturday June 27, 2026 at 2:00PM in the Pavilion at the Spring City Memorial Gardens with Rev. Milton Knox officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday, June 27, 2026 from 12pm to 2pm at Vaughn Funeral Home.
