Carole Ann Shockley, beloved daughter, sister, niece, and aunt passed away at home in Spring City on Monday, December 17, 2018, after a life filled with love, laughter, and service to others.  Born in Knoxville, Tennessee, on November 25, 1952, Carole grew up in Athens, Chattanooga, Chicago, Green Bay, and Bettendorf, Iowa.  She was an outstanding athlete at a time when girls were not always encouraged to play sports and many sunlit evenings were spent playing catch in the back yard with her father, brother, and friends.  She qualified as a lifeguard and worked summers at local pools.  Following her graduation from Bettendorf High School (1971), she attended Tennessee Tech, earning her bachelor's (1975) and Master's (1976) degrees in psychology.

Following her graduation from TTU, Carole moved to Rhea County and went to work as a counselor for what is now Volunteer Behavioral Health in Dayton.  Over the next forty years, she helped countless youth and adults address problems in their lives, always with compassion, humor, and empathy.  She earned a lifetime's bounty of friends with her co-workers, clients, and neighbors, including her incomparable friends Brenda and James McCord.  She also treasured her time with Uncle Earl Tipps and Aunts Levona Tipps and Pauline Robbins, helping to care for them and serving as a true second daughter.

In addition to her career, love of all sports, and many friends, Carole was known for her devotion to animals.  From dogs and gerbils as a child, she was never without a four-legged friend.  Her house was home to many adopted dogs and stray cats and she was a loyal supporter of Rhea County Animal Shelter and the ASPCA.  Among her mourners are her three current dogs Max, Sky, and Chase (available for adoption from Rhea County Animal Shelter).

Predeceased by grandparents Creed and Cornelia Shockley, Harvey and Anna Hamby , parents Russell and Deane Shockley, and Aunts Levona Tipps and Pauline Robbins; survivors include brother Gary Shockley (Caroline) and beloved nephews Connor and Graham Shockley of Nashville, Aunt Barbara Shockley, Aunt Jane Hamby, and many cousins.

Visitation at 1:00 p.m. EST Friday, December 21, 2018, at Vaughn Funeral Home, Spring City, with funeral service at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Dale Wyrick officiating.  Burial will follow in Buttram Cemetery.
